Maastricht, 16 September 2025 - Team RaceArt are the teams’ champions in Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux in 2025. A perfect weekend at Circuit Zolder, where it led the way with 1-2 finishes in both races, allowed the team to clinch the title with a round to spare. It also moved into a 1-2 position in the battle for the drivers’ championship, with Jaap van Lagen in a strong position to be crowned champion during the Zandvoort finale.
Circuit Zolder, the host venue for the penultimate round of the Carrera Cup Benelux season, can be considered the team’s home venue as the Belgian circuit is located just 30 minutes from its Maastricht headquarters. The Porsche single-make series joined the support bill for the FIA European Truck Racing Championship, with somewhat of an usual timetable: instead of the traditional format with a race each on Saturday and Sunday, both races would be contested on Sunday afternoon with just a few hours in between.
The team traveled to Zolder in the knowledge that it was in a strong position to clinch the teams’ championship, having extended its points lead by 69 points during the previous round at Assen. In order to win the title, it would need to outscore second place in the championship by 22 points across the weekend.
From the moment RaceArt’s three Porsche 992 GT3 Cup cars hit the track at Zolder, they displayed strong pace and featured at the front during both Free Practice sessions. championship leader Van Lagen then captured pole position for both races during qualifying, with Sam Jongejan fifth and second respectively. Jules Grouwels, for his part, continued his strong form in the Pro-Am ranks by putting his car on pole in class.
Although Zolder was hit by rain showers on Saturday night and some forecasts predicted more wet weather on Sunday, race day presented the cars with friendly blue skies and sunny conditions as they lined up for Race 1. From pole position, Van Lagen controlled the field while Jongejan recovered from a brief drop back to sixth place by going on the offensive.
The youngster, only in his second full season of Carrera Cup competition, displayed strong racecraft by swooping past two fighting rivals at the Jacky Ickxbocht to move into third. He was then successfully able to pressure second-placed Nick Ho into a braking error at the Turn 9 hairpin, which subsequently allowed him to set up a move into the first corner and take second place. He crossed the line just over five seconds behind race winner Van Lagen, bringing home a 1-2 finish. In the Pro-Am category, meanwhile, Grouwels took the class victory, despite an unfortunate collision with championship rival Jani Käkelä at the Gilles Villeneuve Chicane.
Once the victory celebrations were over, the team had a relatively small window to prepare its three cars for the second and final race of the weekend. That race did come with something of an additional challenge, as a truck competing in the preceding race had spilled a large amount of oil onto the racing surface. The required cleaning led to a delay in the start procedure, but also covered the track in a large amount of sand and dust that impacted the visibility of the drivers.
Despite that, Van Lagen and Jongejan took off from pole position and kept the chasing pack at bay, with Jongejan taking the lead of the race on the third lap with a move down the inside at the Jacky Ickxbocht. From there, the two cars maintained a 1-2 formation to complete a perfect weekend sweep for the team. In the Pro-Am category, Grouwels initially crossed the line in second after a race-long battle. However, he was later promoted to the class victory due to a post-race penalty for the race winner.
With a perfect haul of 90 points from two races, RaceArt clinched the teams’ championship in Carrera Cup Benelux with a round to spare as the team can no longer be overhauled during the season finale at Zandvoort in two weeks. This championship, coming in only the second season since the Maastricht-based squad returned to single-make Porsche racing, is a testament to the passion, hard work and dedication shown by every single member of the team both on and off the track. It also adds to the team’s list of previous accomplishments, which includes championships in Supercar Challenge (2014, 2015), Porsche GT3 Cup Benelux (2016, 2019) and Ferrari Challenge (2020).
“This is a fantastic achievement,” reflected team manager Marwin Moonen. “I’m very happy we were able to secure the teams’ title and in somewhat of a dominant fashion at that. This was a perfect weekend. Double pole position and a double 1-2 finish. Jaap and Sam are back in first and second in the championship. What more could you want? Perfection. I’m very happy. Bring on Zandvoort!”
In the drivers’ championship, Van Lagen’s Race 1 win and Race 2 podium allowed him to further strengthen his position in the standings. Jongejan, meanwhile, made a significant leap up the standings and climbed to second place. With a gap of 25 points heading into the Zandvoort finale, Van Lagen could mathematically clinch the drivers’ title in the first race of the weekend.
Grouwels, for his part, will head into the Zandvoort championship decider with a 19-point advantage in the Pro-Am standings, putting him in strong position for the final two races of the season.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Benelux season will wrap up at the Trophy of the Dunes at Zandvoort on September 26-28. This will mark the second time this season that the series has raced at the seaside circuit. It proved a happy hunting ground for the team earlier this year, where Jongejan claimed his maiden victory as part of a 1-2 in a wet race.
Driver comments:
Sam Jongejan
“It’s wonderful to have secured the teams’ championship and, on a personal front, wrap up the weekend with a race win. Bring on the season finale. I look forward to ending the season on a high with the team and to try and secure this 1-2 in the drivers’ championship. I have no doubt the team is capable of doing that, so I can’t wait to finish the job at Zandvoort”
Jaap van Lagen
“The best thing is that we won the teams’ championship, which is what we’ve been aiming for since the start of the season. This was definitely our strongest weekend of the year, which is nice because it came in Belgium, kind of the team's home ground. Sam and I were both really strong. Unfortunately, Sam didn't do so well in qualifying, but he more than made up for it in the race. We nearly scored the same number of points, but thanks to my pole position, I have one more point. I was also told that my pole time was the fastest lap ever in a Cup car without ABS, and I think I also had the fastest race lap. Really incredibly strong, and I am very grateful to all the guys for that. For me, it was also nice to be back at Zolder, because it had been a few years. The last time was during the 24-hour race. I had to get used to it again, but it remains a beautiful circuit. You can really attack the kerbs here.. Once you've found the right balance, it's great racing. Fortunately, the weather was fantastic, because it looked like it was going to rain. So all in all, I only see positive things and I'm looking forward to the season finale."
Jules Grouwels
“Ready to head to Zandvoort, where we’ll go with a small points lead over Käkelä. Fingers crossed I’ll finally be able to win the Pro-Am championship there!”
